Abstract
Linear optical quantum computing (LOQC) has emerged as one of the most promising approaches toward scalable quantum computation, where single photons serve as the primary carriers of quantum information. The efficient implementation of this architecture requires photodetectors capable of identifying single and entangled photons with high precision, speed, and efficiency. Among the available technologies, superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) have been recognized as a key solution due to their high quantum efficiency, low noise, and fast response time. In particular, multi-pixel SNSPD devices enable photon number resolving (PNR) capabilities, thereby facilitating the advancement of quantum photonic systems. This paper first outlines the operating principles of multi-pixel SNSPDs and then discusses the main challenges facing this technology, including design limitations and thermal crosstalk effects between pixels. Despite these challenges, recent advances in novel superconducting materials, multi-pixel array design, and efficient integration with integrated photonic platforms have opened new avenues for enhancing scalability and industrial deployment of these detectors. Consequently, the findings of this study highlight that multi-pixel SNSPDs represent a critical component for realizing advanced LOQC architectures, with future perspectives centered on integration with photonic systems and improved scalability.
